團紀彦が1986年、天童木工による実験的な展覧会「6人の建築家とSEKISOUとの出逢い」のために制作した《Table II / Chair II》。
團紀彦は、日本を代表する建築家の一人であり、都市や建築における構造と秩序、そして空間の純度を追求する姿勢で知られている。その思考はスケールを家具へと移してもなお一貫しており、本作においても「構造そのものを可視化する」という建築的なアプローチが色濃く反映されている。
本展は、成形合板（積層）という工業技術をテーマに、6名の建築家がそれぞれの視点から家具を提示した試みであった。團はこの素材が持つ自由な造形性と高い強度に着目しながらも、木材としての質感をあえて塗装によって中和し、素材の“らしさ”から距離を取ることで、より抽象度の高い構成体へと昇華している。
特にテーブルにおいては、天板に透明ガラスを採用することで視線は構造体へと導かれ、家具という機能的対象を超え、空間の中に置かれる建築的存在としての性質が強調されている。そこには、家具を単体のプロダクトとしてではなく、空間との関係性の中で成立するものとして捉える、建築家ならではの視座が見て取れる。
なお本作は、本展のために制作された一点ものであり、量産を前提としないコンセプチュアルな試みとして位置付けられる。積層合板という技術と建築家の思考が交差した1980年代の貴重な実践であり、プロダクトと建築の境界を軽やかに横断する作品である。
コンディションとしては、いずれもヴィンテージの風合いとしてお楽しみいただける範囲で、全体としては良好な状態を保っています。

Table II / Chair II was created by Japanese architect Norihiko Dan for the experimental exhibition “Encounter between Six Architects and SEKISOU,” organized by Tendo Mokko in 1986.
Dan, widely recognized as one of Japan’s leading architects, is known for his rigorous exploration of structure, order, and spatial clarity. This architectural thinking translates seamlessly into this work, where the object is conceived not merely as furniture, but as a constructed form—an articulation of structure itself.
The exhibition invited six architects to respond to molded plywood (laminated wood), a material defined by its capacity for both structural strength and formal freedom. Rather than emphasizing the natural texture of wood, Dan deliberately neutralized its materiality through paint, distancing the work from conventional notions of “wooden furniture.” In doing so, he elevated the piece into a more abstract, architectural composition.
In the table, a transparent glass top reveals and activates the underlying structure, directing the viewer’s gaze beyond the surface. This gesture reinforces Dan’s architectural approach: furniture is not treated as an isolated object, but as an element that exists in relation to space.
Importantly, this work was conceived as a one-off piece specifically for the exhibition, not intended for mass production. As such, it stands as a rare and highly conceptual exploration at the intersection of architecture, design, and industrial technique.
A significant example of 1980s experimental design in Japan, Table II / Chair II embodies a moment when architects redefined furniture as spatial thinking in physical form.
